Under the Pomegranate Tree

By Zohreh Ghahremani

When an accident suddenly renders Banoo and her brother Yosef orphans, they are sent to work at a wealthy household in the city of Mashad. In the mansion's basement, among servants and caretakers who become her family, Banoo discovers a world she never knew existed and begins to want things she was never supposed to have.

But the Shah's Iran is shifting faster than anyone expected. As secret police tighten their grip and revolution moves through the streets, Yosef is pulled toward forces Banoo cannot follow. She is left to navigate a country rewriting its rules for women overnight, a found family doing its best to hold together, and the unexamined truth of how her parents really died.

Told through the interweaving perspectives of Banoo, Yosef, and the people caught between them, Under the Pomegranate Tree is a rare portrait of the Iranian Revolution from the inside. This is not the story of the elite, but of the working class and those who stayed and lived with what followed. At its heart, it asks a question that outlasts any regime: When does a woman begin making her own decisions?
